Powers of the Council

For the better performance of its functions, the Council shall, subject to the provisions of this Act, shall have the following power:

  1. To remove from or restore to the Register any name which has been recommended as such by the Government Teaching Service Commission or any employer;
  2. To acquire, hire or dispose of property, borrow money on security of assets of the Council, accept any donation or accept and administer any trust;
  3. To consider any matter affecting the teaching profession and make representations thereon to the Minister or take such action in connection therewith as the Council may consider necessary;
  4. Upon application by any person, to recognize any qualification held by that person, whether such qualification has been obtained in Malawi or elsewhere, as being equal, either wholly or in part to any prescribed qualifications, whereupon such person shall, to the extent to which the qualifications have been so recognized, be deemed to hold such prescribed qualifications;
  5. To perform such other functions as may be prescribed or assigned to the Council by the Minister;
  6. Generally, to do such things as the Council deems necessary or expedient to achieve the object of this Act
