Message from the Secretary for Education

The Ministry of Education places immense value on the pivotal roles played by teachers, teacher educators, and education administrators in shaping the educational landscape of Malawi. Central to the realization of Malawi Agenda 2063 is the cultivation of a highly skilled citizenry, pivotal in steering Malawi towards self-reliance and prosperity. Teachers, particularly in their capacity to educate the young populace, stand as key architects of this ambitious vision.

Recognizing the critical importance of well-trained and qualified educators across primary, secondary, and tertiary education sectors, the Ministry underscores the necessity for teachers, teacher educators, and education administrators to be duly registered and licensed by the Teachers’ Council of Malawi (TCM). This regulatory measure is envisioned to instill professionalism, maintain ethical standards, and ensure the delivery of education by duly recognized authorities within Malawi.

Moreover, the Ministry assumes responsibility for regulating and supervising both pre-service and in-service teacher training initiatives within Malawi. It is imperative that all student teachers undergo indexing by TCM, a process designed to identify systemic gaps and address them effectively. By mandating student-teacher indexing, the Ministry aims to guarantee that aspiring educators meet requisite training standards before transitioning into registered and licensed teaching professionals.

The Ministry mandates prompt indexing of all student teachers upon their enrollment in teacher training colleges, education colleges, or public and private universities. Similarly, qualified teachers are urged to register with TCM and undergo indexing to legally practice their profession. Foreign nationals, possessing requisite teaching qualifications and seeking employment in Malawi, are also encouraged to register and obtain licensure from TCM.

Effective October 2024, the Ministry will enforce strict regulations, prohibiting individuals from teaching in both public and private educational institutions across Malawi without prior registration with TCM.

In extending a warm welcome, the Ministry invites all student teachers, teachers, teacher educators, and education administrators to align themselves with the Ministry’s regulatory framework by becoming duly indexed, registered, and licensed members of TCM. Together, let us uphold the integrity of the teaching profession and collectively contribute to the advancement of education in Malawi.
